Self Compassion vs Self Esteem

In a recent video I created for my Blended Family Video Coaching Series I featured a book that I have found to be invaluable in my coaching support for my clients.

In her book Fierce Self Compassion, Kristin Neff, Ph.D. offers an empowering look at how women can use self-compassion to speak up, claim their power, and thrive. Drawing on an extensive body of research and writing from a unique perspective, Neff provides a refreshingly candid and practical guide to cultivating self-compassion as a tool for personal growth and transformation.

Neff begins by introducing the concept of self-compassion, a practice which involves treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding and respect you would show to a dear friend.

From there she moves into a discussion of how self-compassion differs from self-esteem, offering her readers concrete ways in which they can cultivate self-compassion in their everyday lives. Neff also explores how women’s unique experiences—including gender discrimination and body image issues—impact their relationship with themselves and how they can learn to respond with kindness rather than judgment.
